Research on gambling has a long tradition at the University of Hohenheim. Before the research center was founded, Hohenheim lawyers had already dealt with the legal questions of gambling, consumer researchers with the problem of addiction, and mathematicians and statisticians with the probability of winning. When the research center was founded, scientists from other universities were also integrated and the interdisciplinary basis expanded. The members of the research center bring their expertise in the areas of regulatory and consumer policy, consumer behavior and market theory, mathematics and statistics, finance, public law, economic theory, tax theory, communication science, household and gender economics, marketing, game theory.

What insights do we hope to gain from research?
Gambling has a long tradition as a model on which scientific knowledge is gained. Major areas of expertise have emerged from research into gambling. Thus, the analysis of the dice game gave rise to probability theory and statistics, the analysis of the so-called St. Petersburg paradox, a special game of chance with an infinitely high expected value, the economic benefit theory, and game theory from the analysis of board games. This shows that gambling has long been a proven research model for mathematicians and statisticians, and more recently for economists in particular, in order to gain new knowledge.
